A nominal exchange rate is the market price at which one currency can be exchanged for another. A real exchange rate (inflation-adjusted) factors in the relative inflation of both countries, representing the actual purchasing power of one currency relative to another.
It is calculated by multiplying the nominal exchange rate by the target country's inflation factor (Current CPI / Historical CPI) and dividing it by the base country's inflation factor (Current CPI / Historical CPI):
Real Rate = Nominal Rate × (Target CPI Today / Target CPI Past) ÷ (Base CPI Today / Base CPI Past)This formula adjusts the original nominal exchange rate based on how much purchasing power each currency has lost to inflation since the target date.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) data is sourced directly from the World Bank API and normalized to a 2020 base year (where 2020 CPI = 100) to ensure uniform comparisons.
Our exchange rate database is updated daily at 16:00 CET using files sourced directly from the European Central Bank (ECB) statistical warehouses.
